Call for Papers: Animal welfare

Animal welfare

Animal welfare is becoming an issue of vital importance, if not of grave concern. Every year we slaughter billions of animals around the world for food, clothing and scientific or other purposes. Prior to slaughter, many of these animals live in conditions that we would describe as cruel if applied to humans. The study of animal welfare has multiple dimensions and ramifications, both scientifically and socially. The new animal welfare law recently passed in Spain is a good example of the controversies and debates surrounding this issue. What impact does our way of life have on animal welfare? Is the way we treat animals ethically or morally acceptable? Are all the uses we make of animals equally legitimate? Is the differential treatment we give to certain species or groups justified? Can we improve the welfare of animals under our care, or is it something we should not even be concerned about?

The aim of this monograph of Metode Science Studies Journal is to review the current status of these and other fundamental questions about our relationship with nonhuman animals, and their welfare, from a scientific, philosophical, sociological and legal point of view.
