Measuring the Frequency of Cheating Among Students Using a Randomized List Technique
Abstract
The recent educational reforms have increased the homework students have to complete out of class time. In this article we study the proportion of students who copy that homework. With this aim, we use the randomized list technique, which improves the reliability of the data reported by the students because it decreases their incentives to lie. The obtained results show the power of this method in order to get information in this type of sensitive questions. We find a high proportion of students copying their homework (around 35%), with men copying more frequently than women, except when we restrict the analysis to the best students.
