RESUMEN

Este artículo propone un análisis de las connotaciones de los espejos que aparecen en la Faula de Neptuno e Diana de Francesc Alegre y en el Tirant lo Blanc de Joanot Martorell en estrecha relación con los valores que poseen estos objetos en la Edad Media. Se ha tenido en cuenta su valor artístico, composición y tipología. Se analiza, por un lado, la utilización que Alegre hace de la imagen del espejo como recurso literario que reforzaría el contenido de ficción de la Faula y por otro, el tratamiento que recibe en una de las escenas más importantes del Tirant, en la que el protagonista confiesa sus verdaderos sentimientos a su amada mediante la entrega de un pequeño espejo de mano. Se argumenta a favor de la posibilidad de que dicho espejo contase con una cobertura de marfil, un material que se caracteriza tanto por el lujo y la suntuosidad como por evocar la pureza espiritual y la sensualidad de las relaciones amorosas.

ABSTRACT

The main aim of this article is taking into account the connotations, the composition, the typology and the artistic value that mirrors had in the Middle Ages in order to interpret their role in two Catalan works, Faula de Neptuno e Diana (Neptune and Diana’s Fable) by Francesc Alegre and Tirant lo Blanc by Joanot Martorell. First of all, we analyse the mirror as a literary resource in Alegre’s work as a way used by the author to emphasize the sense of fiction in the plot. Secondly, the study deals with the treatment that this kind of object receives in one of Tirant’s most important passages, in which the main character reveals his feelings to his beloved one by means of a little mirror. Last but not least, we argue it is likely that this mirror was thought to have an ivory cover. Ivory is a material characterised not only by its luxury and sumptuousness, but also because it evokes the concepts of purity and sensuality at the same time.
