Every year we slaughter billions of animals around the world for food, clothing and scientific or other purposes. Prior to slaughter, many of these animals live in conditions that we would describe as cruel if applied to humans. The aim of this issue is to review our relationship with nonhuman animals, and their welfare, from a scientific, philosophical, sociological and legal point of view.
